Yesterday I was just itching to get out of the house and go somewhere and do something interesting. Seeing a movie at the theater was not going to be it, though I do want to see the latest in the Jurassic Park series. I’d rather see that at home. I made some suggestions to my husband about places to visit and ended up choosing Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio to see the Conus Native American burial mound.

But first, we must stop for gas and Dunkin’ for one of my favorite cold coffee drinks, an iced carmel macchiato. 😀

Of course I’d want to see a burial mound with stairs to the top. I’ve been wanting to see Cahokia in Illinois, perhaps the largest mound in North America, too. However, I want to go when the museum/interpretive center is open again. It has been closed for YEARS, to my dismay, for renovations and whatever.

I shot two Youtube “shorts” videos at this location. One is a short spin around the cemetery and a look at the mound. The other is of walking up the stairs to the top of the mound and then the view from up there. Links to those two video shorts will be the end of this post.

Me at the top of Conus Mound in Mound Cemetery, Marietta, Ohio.

I didn’t realize this cemetery had so much historical prominence nor did I realize how beautiful the neighborhood around it is. For homes so close together, it was a beautiful setting, and Marietta is a college town. The college is nearby the cemetery. To me, it had the feeling somewhat of walking around historic Zoar Village, which the boys and I have been to in the past.

Here’s a list of Revolutionary War soldiers buried here at The Mound Cemetery in Marietta, Ohio.

Several years ago, after my big interest in Native American artifacts and history began, our family visited Serpent Mound in Peebles, Ohio, the Hopewell Mounds in Chillicothe, Ohio and visited Nethers’ Farm where you can quarry your own flint ridge flint associated with the Native American trade long ago. I wrote about our visits and you can read those posts at those highlighted links if you’re interested.

Again, if you want to see the short videos of the mound and cemetery:

Part 1 – Conus Mound & Moat and cemetery. (It was such a beautiful day and you can hear the birds.)
Part 2 – Walking up the mound stairs and looking at the view.
